How to Win – How to be unique

2024-09-17

Having a Competitive Advantage is Crucial

Choosing How to Win means building a competitive advantage.

This allows a company to establish a dominant market position based on the customer segment, value proposition, channels, and geography identified when selecting Where to Play (read What does it mean to win in business?).

This dominant position is grounded in the organization’s core competencies and key activities, emphasizing the importance of a coherent strategy and business model.

Types of Advantage

Michael Porter identifies two main sources of competitive advantage: cost leadership and differentiation.

Others propose to develop this dominant position through brand development, intellectual property, or leveraging switching costs.

However, it's essential to be vigilant. Competitive advantages aren't permanent.

As Rita McGrath points out, these advantages are transient and must be continually reinforced by innovation.

Measuring the Advantage

Financial performance is often the key indicator of a competitive advantage.

One of Warren Buffett’s preferred metrics is ROIC (Return on Invested Capital), with a desirable return of over 15%.

Exploring Strategic Options

Several tools and frameworks can help you discover and refine potential sources of competitive advantage:

  • Value Proposition Canvas: Helps you understand your customer needs and assess how well your offerings meet them.
  • Strategy Canvas: Compares your offering to competitors based on key performance criteria.
  • Business Model Canvas: A comprehensive tool for visualizing and assessing the coherence of your business model.
  • 10 Types of Innovation: Helps you analyze dominant business models to develop an alternative positioning by combining business components in a unique way.

These approaches facilitate the proactive exploration of "How to Win."

A structured approach

Developing or maintaining a competitive advantage implies a deep understanding of the various elements of the strategy.

Regularly assess your strategy's coherence and how it adapts to evolving market conditions.

Also, refine and solidify your competitive advantage by proactively monitoring your strategy hypotheses and success factors.

My question: Do you have a clear competitive advantage? How are you actively working to maintain it?
