The Crucial Importance of Mapping Your Value Proposition

2025-06-10

As a leader, are you certain that your value proposition fully resonates with your customers?

This week, let's explore why and how to map your value proposition to transform your strategy and gain a significant competitive advantage.

Value Mapping

The value proposition drives the development of product and service offerings aligned with the jobs, pains and gains associated with a specific customer segment.

The Value Proposition Canvas is very useful in this regard.

However, other approaches can complement and enhance the positioning of the proposition's characteristics in relation to the importance and differentiation criteria of customers.

Blue Ocean Strategy calls for conducting the exercise through the Strategy Map. Others, like Felix Oberholzer-Gee, refer to the Value Map.

They all identify an important element: the positioning of competing offers in relation to the value criteria.

Key Takeaway: Analyzing the key elements of your value proposition in light of the value criteria of your target segment is a powerful way to achieve the differentiation you need to succeed (How to Win).

This exercise is enlightening on several levels:

  • First, it is essential to know the competition's criteria.
  • It requires an accurate understanding of the target segment's expectations for the market offerings and their appreciation.
  • Combining this information allows us to take a critical look at our company's positioning.

This is an exercise that I particularly enjoy. Conducting this in strategic reviews with my clients is rich in learning and allows for an important realization:

  • Do we truly understand our clients and what drives their decisions?
  • Do we adequately know the characteristics of our competitors' offerings?
  • Who are the non-consumers, and why don't they buy?

All important questions for building a solid value proposition.

From Jobs-Pains-Gains to Strategic Choices

This awareness then leads to exploring the jobs, pains, and gains of target clients more deeply by conducting exploratory interviews. These allow us to learn more about motivations, behaviors, and usage contexts. This information can also be related to feedback from sales teams as well as customer feedback captured by customer service teams.

Analyzing this information then allows for creating strategic options that will affect the value proposition and the business model. Options that can be explored and validated to create desirable, viable, and feasible strategic choices.

Ultimately, the management team will make choices. A strategy will be established, and priorities will be set to implement it. In many cases, organizations will have to adapt their business model. For others, however, there will be significant transformations given the gaps with the current business model.

Obviously, this analysis is only one of the elements addressed during a strategy review.

Differentiation and Value Creation

From experience, this value map exercise proves to be one of the most revealing moments for leaders.

Of course, the findings can be destabilizing. They reveal blind spots and force bolder choices.

No strategy is perfect. There is only one that optimizes the conditions for success and allows for organizational alignment and coherence.

During your next strategy review and planning exercise, make sure to integrate value mapping to ensure the creation of differentiation as well as strategic choices to develop a competitive advantage.

Dedicate a significant time to exploring the possibilities offered by a better understanding of your clients. Dive into their minds. That's where true richness and opportunities reside!

You will maximize the coherence between strategy and the execution of priorities, and consequently, value creation.

Have a good week,

Eric L'Heureux
